Early this year, there was a spotlight on the job of Organizing and Productivity Professionals otherwise known as “Professional Organizers” around the world. Thanks to the Netflix Hit show, Tidying Up With Marie Kondo. The organizing industry has become more mainstream over the past few years, though it has existed since the 19th century. As a result of its popularity, more professionals are now leaving their paid employments to do this full time.
With the rise of entrepreneurs all over the world, this is a great time for Aspiring Organizing and Productivity Professionals to explore the endless possibilities and immense potentials in this space. However, the general perception of the industry both by the Public and the Professionals still needs to improve.
As an organizing and Productivity Consultant and Coach, I’ve been privileged to serve in many capacities – from coaching children to training business executives. I’ve worked with households who wanted to get rid of clutter and create systems to improve their lifestyle; I’ve also worked with clients who wanted help with organizing their special events. I’ve even hosted my own live event and sold-out workshops.
An Organizing and Productivity Professional can serve the world in many more ways than just in decluttering and tidying, which seems to be the most recognized zone. Starting out in the industry back in 2011, I thought my zone was Tidy but as I progressed, I realized that as much I love to arrange and declutter physical spaces, I’m my most brilliant self when transferring knowledge. These days, you’ll catch me doing more of coaching, teaching, capacity building, facilitating workshops and strategy sessions.
Are you an already established or a emerging professional who needs more clarity on where and how best to serve in this amazing line of work? Based on research, experiment and experience, I created the Organizing/Productivity GeniusWheel to help you discover how your natural talents, acquired skill-set, experiences and knowledge can be used to build a highly impactful and profitable organizing and productivity business.
Organizing and Productivity Professionals serve in 8 Zones of Genius.
Your Zone of Genius (ZOG) is different from your niche or market segment but can be a determinant of those.
Below are the zones in the Organizing and Productivity Genius Wheel and in no particular order.
Zone 1: Tidy
This seems to be the most popular zone. We have a renowned Organizing Consultant and bestselling author Marie Kondo in this zone of genius. Marie has great decluttering and arranging skills which has earned her the titles “Tidy Expert” and “Decluttering Guru”. Most KonMarie Consultants also operate from this zone of genius.
Zone 2: Craft
Organizers in this zone are great at interior décor and paper crating. You’ll often find them handling DIY home décor, residential space organizing and paper crafting projects. If you’re gifted in decorating and crafting coupled with a deep desire to help others achieve order and efficiency, you may want to explore this organizing and productivity zone. You can help clients personalize their residential and business organizing systems in a way only you can.
Zone 3: Design
I’ve worked on some residential and commercial space design projects in the past which included studying floor plans, working with interior architects and partnering with building contractors. If you’re gifted or skilled in design, you can help clients in the concept design and planning phases of their organizing needs. The services in this zone are highly needed in the areas of space planning, home improvements and interior design.
Zone 4: Education
If you love knowledge acquisition and transference, this could be your realm of greatness. This is mine. Over my 8+ years serving in this industry, I’ve come to realize that teaching, coaching, training and strategizing come more naturally to me than the work involved in the other zones. If you want to build a career as an Organizing Coach, Author, Workshop Presenter, etc, this right here is your ZOG.
Zone 5: Information Management
Document filing, data management, memorabilia management and all types of information management services are in this zone. Members of the Photo Organizers Association (APPO) are a perfect example of the people that work in this area. If you’re talented with managing all forms of information, you may have just discovered your realm of greatness. Due to my Oracle database administration background, I’ve been able to serve in this zone.
Zone 6: Inspiration
Are you a gifted speaker and motivator who also loves the concepts of organizing and productivity? Are you called to do social good? There are potentials for you in this zone. People all over the world need to be inspired towards acquiring the life skills of organizing and taking actions in their daily lives, environments and work. Think about impacting the world locally and globally by inspiring others to choose a better way to live. A better way for our health, our finances, all other aspects of life and the planet.
Zone 7: Project Management
This zone is for natural-born organizers who love to and have the skills to work with teams and handle big projects. With the skills of organizing, productivity and project management, you can work on jobs like company projects, family events, corporate events, etc. I’ve worked in this zone and executed a number of big projects so believe me when I say it’s achievable.
Zone 8: Priority Management
If you’re a Productivity ninja who loves the idea of planning and coordinating the little details of everyday life like scheduling, time management, task management, goal setting, etc, welcome to the priority management zone. Most Virtual Assistants in today’s world possess these qualities and are in high demand. Professionals in this zone often advance towards creating planners and journaling systems to help their clients manage their daily habits and activities.
Remember, these are just ZOGs not industry niches or market segments. There are tons of niches in this industry and you can go right ahead and carve yourself a new one using your ZOG as a guide. Organizers serve in many capacities. It’s advisable you find your market segment so you can rightly position your gifts and talents.

You really make it seem so easy with your presentation but I find this matter to be really something which I think I would never understand. It seems too complex and very broad for me. I’m looking forward for your next post, I抣l try to get the hang of it!
